INCREASED READING, BETTER READERS
Accelerated Reader is one of the ways that reading is promoted at Viking. Students are required to earn a certain number of AR points each quarter in their literature courses. The number of points required varies by grade level. Generally speaking students are asked to read 2 to 3 books outside of class at their grade level to obtain these points.
Students are encouraged to read any book they are interested in. If an AR test is not available for the book the student is interested in reading, the student may write a 10 question multiple choice test and be awarded points for that book. These tests should be given to Mr. Berrey for grading.
STUDENTS WHO EXCEED THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF POINTS qualify for special activities which vary by quarter. For example they might participate in a student/staff volleyball game followed by a treat.
Additional opportunities:
OLD SCHOOL JERSEY CLUB: 100 points
A collection of "old school" jerseys hangs over the check out desk in Viking's library. Students who reach a 100 points in a quarter choose a "old school" jersey to wear for a day. This jersey designates that they will receive special privileges throughout the day. The FIRST student in each grade level to reach a 100 points earns special privileges for a week. Special privileges include but are not necessarily limited to:
Picture taken with tie and displayed on the Wall of Fame
Front of the lunch line privileges
Sit in the teacher's chair for a day
5 extra credit points in the class of their choice
Bring a snack to class
Computer games during study hall
200 POINTS
1000 POINTS
TOP SEVEN POINT EARNERS FOR THE YEAR
These students will accompany Mr. Berrey to Barnes and Noble and help select books for Viking's Library. Each student will also be given money from the book fair to purchase books for their personal library.
